The Korean language is spoken by more than 70 million people worldwide, most of whom live on the Korean peninsula. There are approximately two million more speakers in the United States, two million in China, and another 1,500,000 in Japan, Russia, and the rest of Asia. Korean is historically considered one of the Altaic languages. It may or may not be ancestrally related to Japanese, but the two languages have much in common. In addition, the Chinese language has had a profound influence on the development of Korean–55 percent of Korean words are directly or indirectly associated with analogous Chinese words.
