The Italian language is the official tongue of over 70 million people worldwide. The evolution of Italian has been marked by a complex integration of local dialects. The official Italian language is derived in part from a Tuscan dialect. However, since the country evolved as a network of independent city states, regional dialects persist to this day. These dialects are generally mutually intelligible–however, cultural and idiomatic differences are distinct.

The German language has an interesting and well-documented pedigree. The language can trace its roots to a proto-German ancestor, also the antecedent of the Scandinavian languages, English, French, and Dutch. This proto-German language in turn can trace its origins back even further to an Indo-European ancestor from which came many of the languages now common in the Middle East and Europe.
