The French language is one of the so-called Romance languages, originally constituted from Latin. During the 1st century B.C., Julius Caesar’s invading armies spread around Transalpine Gaul (modern-day France). As the dialects spoken in Gaul diverged from classic Latin, scholars eventually needed a way to codify and structure the new language. During France’s expansionist period centuries later, French soldiers and cultural emissaries brought their language to people across the world. Today, French serves as the official language of more than 20 countries on four continents, and there are more than 280 million speakers across the globe.
